Is there a doctor in the house? || November 07, 2002
Kimo has been fighting a cold off and on for two weeks. It wasn't anything major so i didn't take him to the doc. Then all this week his eyes were matting alot, with discharge in the corners. This morning they were matted closed. i had to use a warm washcloth to get them open for him. i suspected pink eye, told him to go back to sleep and called the doctor's office for an appt. for this afternoon.

When he woke up the second time, his eyes were almost clear and he said they weren't bothering him anymore. He hopped around, playing just like he normally plays all day, and i felt kind of foolish taking him in to see the doctor. i could just imagine taking up an appt slot that could be better used by a sicker (more sick?) child. i've never been one to run my kids to the doctor with every sniffle and sneeze. But some things you just don't goof around with, eyes being one of them. And I figured we might as well keep the appointment and maybe the doctor could suggest something for Kimo's cold, since it had hung on so long.

Come to find out he has pink eye, adenovirus AND Strep Throat!! Poor kid. The strep throat blew me away. He had never once complained of a sore throat and even told the doctor that his throat felt fine. Dr. C left it up to me whether or not to do the throat culture for strep since he wasn't sure. The problem was that strep doesn't cause the eye problems Kimo was having. i said "We're here, we might as well go ahead and do the culture" so it was done. Damn, he hated it. i mean, he actually ended up in a little flurry of tears, saying it hurt. This is the same kid who didn't even flinch the day he got three shots in a row. The nurse was a real sweetheart though and brought him an icepop to suck on to soothe his throat while we waited for the test results.

The kicker? He's highly contagious and has been for several days and i'm starting to feel bad myself. Slight fever, eyes bothering me, throat feeling funny .. general fatigue. Dammit. :(

Tomorrow night is also Fall Festival, the major fundraiser, for his school. (Which Kimo can go to if he goes fever-free for the next 24 hours, since his antibiotics will have kicked in by tomorrow evening) One of my duties as class mom was to schedule volunteers to work the little carnival game in his classroom. i already had the volunteers lined up by early last week, so that isn't a problem. The problem will be that i was scheduled to work it the whole shift, as a backup for the other parents. Bleh. i called Kimo's teacher and told her what was going on and she reassured me that if i need to skip it she will cover for me and that the other parents will pitch in to help. With my tendency to feel enormous guilt whenever i let someone down, i'd rather go and suffer than to stay home curled up in bed and feel like the most horribly selfish person on earth.

The practical side of me says "Stay home, fool! You have to get better so you can take care of the lil monsters. Plus, if you have pink eye, you'll be spreading it to every person that walks into the room." Kind of hard to argue with that logic, huh? The thing is i won't argue, i'll just flat ignore it.

Also, tomorrow night is Gomez's first school dance. He and his posse have plans to meet and walk in together. ~grins~ He waffled on whether to go to it or to go to the Festival, but he finally decided to go to the dance after he found a safety net of friends to go with.

After both events the boys are going home with their Dad. This is SUCH a good thing. i think i'll spend the weekend curled up with a few books, the remote and a few mugs of raspberry chocolate hot cocoa.

Stay well!
